In Łódź, Pelion is a partner and co-organiser of the event.
This year’s 11th Global Dignity Day (in Poland celebrated for the 9th time) will again bring together school children from all over the world to talk about dignity, tolerance and kindness. The event traditionally takes place on the third Wednesday of October and this year was celebrated on October 18th. However, meetings and discussions of famous people and the youth, focused on the issue of dignity, will be held throughout the school year.
This year, students from Łódź schools talk about dignity with the following guests:
- judge Anna Maria Wesołowska,
- volleyball player Małgorzata Niemczyk, member of the Polish national team and European Champion in 2003,,
- journalist Joanna Barczykowska,
- world-famous violinist Izabella Żebrowska,
- publisher of books on Łódź and photographer Jacek Kusiński.
The guiding motto of this year’s Dignity Day is “Different but equal”. The aim of the event is to make the young people aware that despite ideological, ethnic, religious or cultural differences every person has the right to respect their dignity and that, regardless of the differences, people around the world share similar dreams and needs.
This year’s celebrations of the Global Dignity Day are held under the patronage of Marek Michalak, the Ombudsman for Children.
The initiative was established by three members of the World Economic Forum: Prince Haakon of Norway, philosopher Pekka Himanen of Finland, and American social activist John Hope Bryant. In Poland, it has been popularised by Young Global Leaders: Jacek Olechowski and Jacek Szwajcowski, President of the Pelion Management Board. The purpose of the project is to make young people more receptive to the idea of respect for human dignity and to encourage them to engage in activities fostering mutual tolerance and kindness. The initiative involves as many as 60 countries and has so far gathered more than 1.5m children to talk on dignity. In Poland, the Dignity Day is organised by Global Dignity Poland. In Łódź, the initiative has been organised, since its inception, with the help of volunteers from Pelion S.A. and the DOZ dbam o zdrowie Foundation.
