Live endoscopic surgery demonstrations at Brzeziny Specialist Hospital

On May 24th 2017, the Brzeziny Specialist Hospital became a venue of live surgical demonstrations given by world-class experts in endoscopy from Japan. The procedures were broadcast live to participants of the International Workshop on Advanced Endoscopic Techniques held in Łódź.

Prof. Yutaka Saito (Head of Endoscopy Division at the National Cancer Center in Tokyo), prof. Hirato Kita of the Teykio University in Tokyo, and Dr Makoto Nishimura (Head of Endoscopy Division at the Tokyo Metropolitan Geriatric Hospital and Institute of Gerontology) are distinguished Japanese experts in endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), a technique of procedures and operations performed using an endoscope (gastroscope, colonoscope, etc.). ESD procedures are widely used in removal of neoplasms in Japan. ESD offers a number of advantages, including high efficacy, reduced invasiveness (no need of surgical incisions), shorter performance time, and faster patient recovery. By contrast, most surgeries in Europe continue to be performed using a scalpel.

In Poland, close to 10,000 patients have a surgery for colorectal cancer every year, with only 300 of the procedures performed using ESD. The method has become a routine treatment in only a handful of medical centres in Poland, including the Brzeziny Specialist Hospital.

The idea to organise live endoscopic surgery demonstrations at the Brzeziny Specialist Hospital came from two of the hospital’s specialists: prof. Adam Dziki, a world-class colorectal surgeon, and Dr Michał Spychalski, one of several doctors in Poland who perform advanced ESD procedures.

The Brzeziny Specialist Hospital is a prominent centre for the treatment of colorectal and breast neoplasms, performing about 400 oncological surgeries annually.

The Hospital is also one of Poland’s three leading centres that perform almost all of gastrointestinal neoplasm removal operations and procedures in the country.

The Hospital features the Centre for Colorectal Disease—the first such centre in Poland, established and led by Prof. Adam Dziki, a world-class proctologist.
