Another innovative surgery at the Brzeziny Specialist Hospital

Doctors from the Brzeziny Specialist Hospital have performed a very rare surgical procedure of placing a biodegradable balloon in the shoulder joint to protect it from degeneration as well as support the patient’s recovery and regaining control of her arm. In about a year, when the patient’s joint recovers, the balloon will have disappeared on its own.

Having severed tendons in the shoulder girdle muscles, the 70-year-old patient of the Brzeziny Specialist Hospital was unable to move her arm and was suffering from exquisite pain. The severed tendons were also causing damage to the joint bones.

The tendon reconstruction and balloon implantation surgery was performed by Dr Grzegorz Sobieraj, a specialist in orthopaedics and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system from the Brzeziny Specialist Hospital.

During the procedure, the balloon was filled with saline to create a dampening cushion separating the bones from each other. This extremely rare surgery allowed the patient to avoid having an artificial prosthesis placed in the shoulder.

One of the balloon’s advantages is biodegradability. About a year after the surgery, the balloon dissolves and is absorbed by the body, which eliminates the need of a removal procedure.

The Brzeziny Specialist Hospital has also performed other innovative surgeries. In 2015, Brzeziny became the first hospital in the Łódź Province to have performed an EGD gullet surgery to treat achalasia. In February 2016, a team led by Dr Jacopo Martellucci from Florence, Italy, and Prof. Adam Dziki implanted a neurostimulator for faecal incontinence in the first patient in Poland.

The Brzeziny Specialist Hospital is a prominent centre for the treatment of colorectal and breast neoplasms, performing about 400 oncological surgeries annually.

The Hospital is also one of Poland’s three leading centres that perform almost all of gastrointestinal neoplasm removal operations and procedures in the country.

The Hospital features the Centre for Colorectal Disease—the first such centre in Poland, established and led by Prof. Adam Dziki, a world-class proctologist.
