2016 marked the tenth year of the Global Dignity Day, which traditionally takes place on the third Wednesday of October. That day famous people around the world met with youth to talk about dignity. In Poland, Global Dignity Day events are organised with schools in Łódź and Warsaw.

This year in Łódź, the first meetings with youth were held on October 18th, when Ms Małgorzata Niemczyk, a famous Polish volleyball player and currently Member of the Polish Sejm, discussed dignity with students of the 26th Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński General Secondary School.

On October 19th, more meetings revolving around dignity were held; the invited guests included:

  • Judge Anna Maria Wesołowska (at the 19th Karol Wojtyła Secondary School Complex),
  • Opera singer Anna Cymmerman (at the 20th Hugo Kołłątaj Junior High School),
  • Famous photographer and publisher of Łódź Jacek Kusiński (at the 17th Bohaterów Monte Cassino Junior High School).

In total, this year’s Dignity Day events in Łódź were attended by almost 700 students and teachers. The main focus of the meetings was on cyberhate and hate speech.

The purpose of the project is to make young people more receptive to the idea of respect for human dignity and to encourage them to engage in dignity-focused initiatives during a school year.

Since the initiative’s inception, volunteers from Pelion and the DOZ Foundation have been engaged in organising Dignity Day events in Łódź.

Some of the guests invited to meet with students in Łódź have been the court judge Anna Maria Wesołowska, ethnographer Aldona Plucińska, PhD, athlete Artur Partyka, marathon runner Sławomir Narel, multi-marathon runner and Senior Marathon World Champion Jan Morawiec, mountaineer Piotr Pustelnik, traveller Tomasz Grzywaczewski, Director of Caritas in Łódź Father Jacek Ambroszczyk, MP and former volleyball player Małgorzata Niemczyk, journalists Magdalena Michalak and Marcin Wąsiewicz, Director of the Łódź branch of the Polish National Television Jacek Grudzień, singer and songwriter Krzysztof Cwynar, and singer, co-founder and leader of the cabaret group Trzeci Oddech Kaczuchy Andrzej Janeczko.

The Global Dignity Day was established by three members of the World Economic Forum: Prince Haakon of Norway, Norwegian philosopher Pekka Himanen and American social activist John Hope Bryant. In Poland the initiative has been popularised by Young Global Leaders Jacek Olechowski and Jacek Szwajcowski, President of the Pelion Management Board.
