2015 marked the eighth year of the Global Dignity Day, which traditionally takes place on the third Wednesday of October. This year it was celebrated on October 21st. At 10am sharp that day famous people in over 50 countries around the world met with youth to talk about dignity.

In Poland, Global Dignity Day events are organised with schools in Łódź, Warsaw, Kraków and Poznań.

Some of the guests invited to meet with students in Łódź have been the court judge Anna Maria Wesołowska, ethnographer Aldona Plucińska, PhD, athlete Artur Partyka, marathon runner Sławomir Narel, multi-marathon runner and Senior Marathon World Champion Jan Morawiec, mountaineer Piotr Pustelnik, traveller Tomasz Grzywaczewski, Director of Caritas in Łódź Father Jacek Ambroszczyk, MP and former volleyball player Małgorzata Niemczyk, journalists Magdalena Michalak and Marcin Wąsiewicz, Director of the Łódź branch of the Polish National Television Jacek Grudzień, singer and songwriter Krzysztof Cwynar, and singer, co-founder and leader of the cabaret group Trzeci Oddech Kaczuchy Andrzej Janeczko.

In 2015, the Dignity Day was observed at four schools in Łódź:
  • 20th Junior High School at ul. Olimpijska 9, where Jacek Kusiński, the publisher of numerous photo albums of Łódź and the book ‘Bezbronne Miasto Łódź’ shared his love for the city and talked about the dignity of its residents;
  • 6th Junior High School at ul. Limanowskiego 124, where the famous volleyball player turned MP Małgorzata Niemczyk led students in a conversation on dignity in sports;
  • 17th Junior High School at ul. Traktorowa 35, where students met with Magdalena Michalak, a journalist working in the Łódź branch of the Polish National Television;
  • 19th Secondary School Complex at ul. Żeromskiego 115, which invited two artists: opera singer Anna Cymmerman and violinist Izabella Żebrowska.
The number of Dignity Day Ambassadors is growing by the year. Those who took part in the event once want to meet with students again to discuss dignity and respect, if only other commitments allow them to do so.

This year, the Dignity Day Ambassadors were joined by the world-famous violinist Izabella Żebrowska.

Since the initiative’s inception, volunteers from Pelion and the DOZ Foundation have been engaged in organising Dignity Day events in Łódź. The purpose of the project is to make young people more receptive to the idea of respect for human dignity and to encourage them to engage in dignity-focused initiatives during a school year.

The Global Dignity Day was established by three members of the World Economic Forum: Prince Haakon of Norway, Norwegian philosopher Pekka Himanen and American social activist John Hope Bryant. In Poland the initiative has been popularised by Young Global Leaders Jacek Olechowski and Jacek Szwajcowski, President of the Pelion Management Board.
