doz.pl – The Most Innovative Health Website in Poland

Following in the footsteps of western societies, more and more Poles look for information on health protection, disease prevention and health care issues on the Internet. doz.pl, the biggest Polish health website, is a second-generation portal combining the function of an e-pharmacy with a health and drug encyclopaedia. doz.pl will now also offer secure delivery of medicines directly to customers’ homes.

“Eight months ago we opened an Internet pharmacy combined with a health website. All necessary information has been gathered in one place, as our users not only buy drugs, but also look for information on health issues or addresses of specialist doctors”, says Karol Piasecki, President of DOZ SA.“The demand for such services is very high. Our website is already visited by over half a million people each month – since the launch of the portal the figure increased by approx. 570%, although we have not carried out any marketing campaign yet".

Health on the Internet
According to forecasts, in two years’ time 50% of the Polish population will have access to the Internet. The number of customers who order products and services online is also growing. Since May 1st 2007, also medicines can be ordered through the Internet. The prices offered by online pharmacies can be lower by as much as 30%, therefore we can anticipate, based on the experience from western markets, that in 2012 10% of all medicinal products will be sold online on the market which today is worth PLN 21.5bn.
An online pharmacy is only an element of a modern Internet pharmacy.The future belongs to portals which combine an e-pharmacy (offering home delivery of medicines) with an online medical and pharmaceutical consultation service. Patients in the west increasingly turn to the Internet as the source of health-related information. A study conducted in w 2006 by Pew Internet & American Life Project suggests that 80% of all Internet users look for exactly such type of information, including information on specific diseases, medicines and healthy lifestyle. 58% of respondents admitted that information found on the Internet had, at one point or another, influenced their decisions on how to cope with various health conditions. Some of them also said that such information persuaded them to go and see a doctor.

doz.pl – The Biggest and Most Innovative Polish Health Portal
There is only one second-generation portal in Poland at the moment. www.doz.pl was created in November 2007, and quickly became the leader in terms of user growth rate. The portal offers a wide range of information and services, including sale of medicines.
The www.doz.pl online pharmacy as the only such pharmacy on the market operates on the basis of theI Care for My Health Pharmacies (Apteki dbam o zdrowie), the largest chain of pharmacies in Poland.Cheaper medicines may be ordered online and collected at one of the 1,800 outlets participating in the i>I Care for My Health Pharmacies. This policy allows www.doz.pl to constantly reduce its prices, as the purchase cost does not include the cost of shipment (usually in the case of an order placed through the Internet, the purchase is advantageous when the value of ordered products exceeds PLN 80-100.The customer has the guarantee that the ordered medicine will be available at his pharmacy and patients with acute conditions do not have to wait for the delivery.Medicines are cheaper than in a traditional pharmacy because one of the portal’s sources of income is advertising revenue, which allows doz.pl to offer more attractive prices to the customers. Apart from the e-pharmacy, the doz.pl portal also offers:

  • Articles written in an approachable style on health and beauty issues as well as new medical products offered on the market;
  • Drug encyclopaedia – a regularly updated database of all medicinal products and cheaper equivalents available in Poland;
  • Health encyclopaedia;
  • List of doctors – containing information on doctors and medical establishments everywhere in Poland;
  • Patients can ask questions online and get answers from pharmacists and doctors on duty.

    Home Delivery of Medicines – Safe and Legal
    In May 2008, the Minister of Healthcare issued a regulation under which medicines ordered online may be delivered to customers’ homes. The product delivery conditions must be such as to ensure that the product quality remains unchanged and that it can be safely used by the patient. In August 2008, doz.pl will be the first Polish website to launch direct home deliveries of medicines in full compliance with the Polish law. Doz.pl will deliver products in special air-conditioned vans, directly from the pharmacy located nearest to the ordering customer (rather than from a distribution centre, which would extend the delivery time, thus increasing the related risks) to achieve the shortest possible order execution time. The customers in Warsaw and Poznań will be the first ones to be offered the service, which is expected to be rolled out nationwide by the end of 2008.

    doz.pl – A Model Project to be Followed in other Countries of the Region
    “Home deliveries of medicines will boost the turnovers of the pharmacies participating in the programme,”says Karol Piasecki.“To date, online shopping through doz.pl has generated extra sales revenue of more than PLN 4m for the I Care for my Health Pharmacies. By the end of 2008, PLN 10m worth of medicines are expected to be ordered from the online pharmacy”.The portal is owned by DOZ SA, a member of the CEPD N.V. international holding.“Internet projects, such as doz.pl, will be key to winning and retaining a strong position on new markets. The Internet is a distribution channel which has vast potential for growth, not only in Poland”,says Maria Wiśniewska, the President of CEPD N.V.“The doz.pl website will be a model for similar projects in other countries in Central Europe.”
